Almost 35 years ago, in USA, Michigan, appeared a new type of music, that has been called techno. It was created by 3 interesting composers, Derrik May, Juan Atkins and Kevin Sauderson. They initially composed it as electronic music, but since then, there has appeared a big number of variations on this type, such as: funk, electro, Chicago house or electric jazz. By musical terms, the techno genre is a type that uses techno samples repeatedly, adding also a continuous DJ set. The time used in writing this genre is a common four/four one, using a bassdrum that marks every quarter note pulse.
There are many known categories of this particular genre, but I think that we all have heard about the Detroit sound. Its creators combined funk, soul, electro types, disco in only one sort of music, rejecting the classical R&B or even the traditional influence of soul. In this way, the new sound was created through technology. Some people thought of it as a mistake, but in the end, every clubber started to embrace it, becoming a very popular song.
The second most known type of techno is The Chicago house. One of the most representative songs from this type specifically is “Strings of Life” and it has been born through the desire of underlining the lifestyle that was in Chicago in the mid ‘80s, and so, its house music. Going on to another techno baby, we discover the acid house. It appeared in the UK, growing in a short time between the music fans. As soon as it was born, it became a well known phenomenon, especially for club frequenters.
After a while, the album that succeeded to bring all the types of techno music together appeared. The sales were quite low comparing to the expectations of the producers but it was a strongly made platform towards creating the new genre.
After some years of evolution, this music passed through quite a process: Germans started embracing it, calling it “tekkno” genre and also, giving birth to a new branch, called minimal techno. It can be observed in 1991 the evolution of this music, from Detroit techno, until the apparition of the “intelligent techno”, a new underground style. This particular type brought together styles as breakbeat hardcore, The Dutch Gabber or the Schranz.
There are known many ways in making techno music, but the most used is the compositional method. Many devices capable of generating diverse sounds are being placed in the studio, synchronized to a computer sequencer and thus, they are given the capacity of playing the same notes in the same time.
In the end, putting aside the fact that we and the technology have evolved so much that now we have every tool we may need, the music has evolved too. On the other hand, we have lost the uniqueness of doing music ourselves, artists being capable of personalizing their own sounds in the present.
